04.02.10 A REPLACEMENT FOR GRANDMA?

Let me just start by saying that although Dexter appears in the same outfit in every post -- this does not mean that I never change his clothes. On the contrary, I change his clothes SEVERAL times a day, due to major and minor accidents. It is just a very strange coincidence that the camera always comes out when he is wearing his monkey pajamas.

Anyway, this post is in answer to my facebook status "My mom just left for Utah... Now who will take my screaming baby when I feel like taking a nap?!" This is who will take my screaming baby while I take a shower... Look he even sort of smiles in it! And to clarify - Dexter is much to polite to ever scream. Instead he just clears his throat repeatedly to let me know he is unhappy.

04.06.10 HEAT WAVE

Today it was 90 degrees outside. Our air conditioners have not been installed yet this year, and we live in the top floor of an old house with a black roof. So Dex and I spent the day inventing ways to beat the heat. Mostly we just stayed in our tie-dyed underwear all day and tried to expend as little energy as possible. It was exhausting.

Then Mike came home and we invited him to join in the fun.

04.07.10 THE TOWN TROUBADOUR

This post actually has nothing to do with Dexter, but I threw up this picture to appease my mother.

So, Winchester has a town troubadour. He's almost as cool as the troubadour on the Gilmore Girls, except that it appears that he only sings Counting Crows songs. On the up-side, I'm pretty sure he knows the words to every Counting Crows song ever written. I walk through the walking mall almost everyday, sometimes in the morning, sometimes at night... he's always there. I've often wondered where the guy lives, and what his story is.

Well, today I went on an earlier-than-normal walk (to beat the heat, see previous post), and he wasn't in the walking mall.

Gasp.

I felt lost and confused without him! But I continued my walk around the town. I found our town troubadour sitting on the front porch of a little red brick house in a cute neighborhood. Actually, he found me. He was drinking tea, and called out for me to stop when I walked past (he recognized me from my daily walks, it turns out). I found out that his name is Josh, and he is recently divorced, and thinks Dexter is a very "distinct"-looking baby.

04.09.10 POWER TO THE PEOPLE

For some reason Dexter is frequently making this inspiring gesture with his right hand. It's great when he's in his pack 'n play and all you can see is his fist sticking up. Really motivational.

In other news -- today Dex had his first smile attempts. They were pretty funny. You can definitely tell he's trying to smile because he looks happy instead of deeply concerned (which seems to be his normal resting expression), but his "smiling" is mostly just squinting his eyes and opening his mouth. Here's a great shot of his nostrils. They're very manly.

04.10.10 ONE MONTH PHOTO SHOOT

So, I stole this idea from Jessica Chapman. Here is the first installment of Dexter and the elephant. More in the months to come.

And here's a shot of today's tummy time!

P.S. Did you notice our new header? We bought that typewriter at a yard sale today! Isn't it lovely?!

04.11.10 THE FUNNY PART OF TUMMY TIME

He's trying so hard! I believe in him.

04.14.10 SMILES AND FROWNS

04.19.10 DEXFACE

I think I might be a bad mother because I love to see this kid mad probably as much or more than I like to see him smile.

It's also fun when he's serious:

When he's tired:

And fine, when he's happy:

This is his morning hair. Yikes. Gets that from his father.

And here is our Sunday nap.

04.25.10 SOME SIMPLE PLEASURES

Some Mike, Manda and Dexter News:

We love having Dex around. Mike was holding Dexter yesterday and laughing at the weird faces the dude was making and he said, "I really like being a dad.... It's like I'm so proud of this little guy... but I mean, he doesn't really do anything." Dex seems to be experiencing with his facial muscles a lot more these days. It's funny to watch him try different faces out. In the video, mike is blowing in Dexter's face.

He still loves the ceiling fan a lot more than he loves us. In fact, when he's crying, if you can get him to calm down enough to open his eyes and you're under the ceiling fan - he forgets that he's mad and remembers his deep love for the fan.

In other news : we are getting really excited for Kurt, Jean, Dean, Erika, and Braden to come visit us this week. They should get here on Thursday night, and we just can't wait for Dex to meet everyone (and reconnect with his grandma ej). See you guys soon!

4.30.10 Dex meets Grandparents and Uncle Braden

4.30.10 Arlington, Mt Vernon, Nighttime DC

First, we headed to Arlington:

Dex thought that was fun:

Then we tried to go to Mt. Vernon....

But it was closed!

So we went into DC to see the monuments at night. Braden took good care of Dex.

5.1.10 Apple Blossom Festival!!!

First thing in the morning Dean, Erika, Manda, Mike and Braden all ran the Apple Blossom 10k race. It was 70 degrees when the race started! Yuck!

Then we walked around the walking mall to check out the crowds, the corn dogs, and the funnel cakes! Mom was in "corn dog heaven".

Finally, we watched the parade from Picadilly street, where our friend Mike Beliew lives.

It turns out that we had just missed Val Kilmer (who was this year's Grand Marshall), so Mike, Jean, and Kurt decided to take a shortcut to catch him further on down the parade route. Apparently, it was such a big deal, that this is the one and only time since Kurt's hip replacement that a situation was urgent enough that he felt he needed to run. Iceman is THAT big of a deal!
